Llangefni Town Council was formed following the reorganisation of Local Authorities in 1974. There are 39 Community and Town Councils on Anglesey.
The electoral population of the town is 5,116 and for the purpose of local government is split into three wards, Cefni, Cyngar and Tudur, with five Councillors representing every ward. The majority of present Councillors were elected in June 2008 with the remaining co-opted to serve office for four years.
The annual general meeting is held in May every year when a new Mayor and Deputy Mayor are elected.
